SITL PX4 new airframe in QGC


Is there a way to update Firmware in QGC when running in SITL? I have updated my PX4 installation with a new airframe, following the tutorials. But when I run the QGC the new airframe does not appear. Looking at some old post it looked liked you should upload the new PX4 build in QGC, before the new airframe appear. But I do not have any hardware connected, then I’m not able to upload a new build to QGC. Is this only possible when having a hardware connected? I have not yet complied the QGC in Qt, but is this needed for entering advanced mode of QGC?
I’m working in ubuntu 20.
