Hi Everyone,
I have just joined an aerospace company as an embedded software engineer and here comes the trouble. My boss has asked me to translate 3-axis magnetic field data to the NED coordinate frame. I beg your pardon as I am quite novice to the aerospace field. My initial response to myself was if Magnetometer is already giving data (Hx,Hy,Hz and heading) with respect to the true north, thenm why would someone want me to convert the raw data to the NED frame. Please tell me what is wrong with me.
Not sure if you got an answer yet, but it is most likely the case that the magnetometer is giving you magnetic field strength in the sensor coordinate frame. You assume that the strongest field direction (or something like that) points to magnetic north (which would be true if the sensor is not being tricked by nearby magnetic objects or fields).
There are a few gotchas between “Magnetic North” and “True North”, the vagaries of which are a quick google search away.
But I heavily assume that your senior is expecting that you are getting raw readings in the sensor coordinate frame and not already transformed to NED
