How to access flight controller console via USB?

I see system console, and I tried to access flight controller with “screen” command via USB.

command is:
screen /dev/tty.usbmodem01 57600 8N1

But it shows stream of unreadable messages(see screen shot), and I can do nothing.

Is this the correct behavior?

Why not use QGC connection?
