If we put the orange cube pixhawk in the middle of the 22,000 mah lipo batteries, will the pixhawk be affected by magnetism? And if we put the Pixhawk in a place that is not closed, will it be affected by dust etc. because it is in the open?
I think so but best to try it out and check the mag data. If the battery is not removed, you can do the mag calibration and account for it. However, if you remove the battery, then the calibration might not be valid when you use a different battery or insert it slightly differently.
Now when the Pixhawk is close to the batteries, it’s likely close to power electronics, e.g. the wires to the batteries. If they carry current it will influence the magnetic field measured.
Usually the way to avoid these issues is to use the external mag that comes with most GPS and can be mounted on a mast or some other place away from power electronics.
I can see two potential issues:
- Electronics getting damaged over time if they are out in the elements. You can probably judge for yourself whether that’s a problem for your application.
- The barometer getting “clogged” by dust. I haven’t seen that in reality myself but I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.
