Unable to change red paper airplane icon or drone location

Hi! I’m trying to move the icon from a place in Europe to the place we will do the testing, and I can set launch point/waypoints to the location I wanted but not the paper airplane icon. This causes the geofence error. Please help!

Hi Emma, welcome!

The red paper-airplane icon normally represents the vehicle’s current reported position, so it is different from the launch point or mission waypoints and generally cannot just be dragged to another location.

If you are testing in simulation, I would first check where the simulated vehicle is being spawned/home-positioned. If it is still reporting a position in Europe while your mission and geofence are at the intended test location, QGroundControl is correctly seeing them as geographically separated.

Could you confirm whether this is:

1. PX4 SITL/simulation, or
2. a real vehicle with GPS?

If it is SITL, also mention which simulator you are using (Gazebo, jmavsim, etc.). Then we can point you to the exact place to set the simulated start/home coordinates rather than trying to move the vehicle icon in QGC.

Hi Yigitcan! Thank you so much for your reply! This is a PX4 STIL simulation, and we are using Gazebo.

Thanks Emma that explains it.

Since you’re using PX4 SITL with Gazebo, don’t try to move the red aircraft icon in QGroundControl. Set the simulated vehicle’s geographic start/home location before launching SITL.

For example:

export PX4_HOME_LAT=<your_test_latitude>
export PX4_HOME_LON=<your_test_longitude>
export PX4_HOME_ALT=<your_test_altitude>
make px4_sitl gz_x500

Replace those values with the coordinates of your intended test location and restart the simulation/QGroundControl.

The aircraft icon should then appear at that simulated location, so your vehicle position, mission and geofence are all in the same geographic area.

If you are using a different Gazebo vehicle than x500, just keep your normal SITL target instead of gz_x500.

If it still appears in Europe after restarting, paste the exact command you use to start PX4/Gazebo and we can check the next step.
