About AirSpace Innovation:

AirSpace Innovation (ASI) is a small, fast-moving engineering firm working at the intersection of autonomy, air traffic management, and new entrant operations. We help federal, commercial, and academic partners bring complex systems to life, from concept and simulation to operational tests. Leveraging our expertise in aviation technology, air traffic management, and UAS, we collaborate with diverse stakeholders to achieve our customers’ missions efficiently and cost-effectively. At ASI, we strive to support an environment where our employees can thrive, offering flexible work schedules.

Job Description:

We’re looking for a part-time developer with strong QGroundControl (QGC) and UI development experience to help us build and refine ground control capabilities for multi-drone operations. This role is ideal for someone who has already worked on real UAV products, understands how operators use mission software in the field, and can translate complex autonomy and telemetry workflows into usable, polished interfaces.

You will focus on extending and customizing QGC for multi-vehicle mission planning, fleet visibility, operator workflows, and integration with autonomy and payload systems. We want someone who is comfortable working in a lean engineering environment, collaborating through GitHub, and contributing code that is clean, reviewable, and production-minded.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Develop and customize QGC for a multi-UAS application.
  • Build and improve operator-facing UI/UX for mission planning, telemetry, fleet status, visualization, and control workflows.
  • Support features related to multi-drone tasking and mission execution
  • Implement and refine interfaces for cameras, gimbals, payload controls, and mission data displays where needed.
  • Work within a modern engineering workflow using GitHub, pull requests, code reviews, issue tracking, and CI/CD practices.
  • Contribute to simulation-driven validation and testing workflows for QGC-integrated functionality.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience customizing or extending QGC in production or advanced prototype environments.
  • Strong Qt / QML / C++ UI development experience.
  • Experience building software for multi-drone or multi-vehicle systems, including mission planning, telemetry, or operator control interfaces.
  • Comfort with GitHub-based development workflows, including branching, pull requests, peer review, and issue-driven execution.
  • Experience working with PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, or closely related UAV software stacks.
  • Strong engineering judgment and the ability to work independently in a part-time, fast-moving environment.
  • Clear communication and the ability to collaborate well with distributed technical teams.

Bonus Points For:

  • Background in UAV autonomy, robotics, or mission systems.

  • Experience in both established companies and startups, with evidence that you can balance product quality, speed, and ownership.

  • Experience improving product usability, not just implementing backend features.

  • ROS2swarm, SLAM/VIO

  • Systems-level challenges: networking, time synchronization, robust communication links, cybersecurity for UAS links.

  • Experience supporting public safety, aerospace, defense-adjacent, or safety-critical systems.

  • FAA Part 107 certificate; test-range ops; export-control awareness; security clearance eligibility.
