Hi all,

I tried to get precision landing to work following the documentation guide here [https://docs.px4.io/en/advanced\_features/precland.html](https://docs.px4.io/en/advanced_features/precland.html)

I can successfully run

make posix\_sitl\_default gazebo\_iris\_irlock

but when I try to run it with

drivers/irlock

added to the posix\_sitl\_default config file, I get the following from std out

* * *

It seems it can’t find the file nuttx/clock.h

I figured that in SITL, it shouldn’t be looking for any nuttx installed microcontroller?

(In case anyone was wondering, the line modules/landing\_target\_estimator was already included in my config file, so I was running it with this as well).

Does anyone have any ideas why I can’t build the firmware? I’m running version 1.8.0-dev by the way.

Thanks,

Tom

For SITL, you don’t have to modify any config files.

SITL also doesn’t use the nuttx irlock driver, it gets the data from gazebo.

Ah, okay, thanks a lot. I did get it working before without anything added to the config files, but whenever I try to precision land with

command mode auto:precland

it just times out, even though I’m right over the virtual IR lock. The MAV\_CMD\_NAV\_LAND mentioned in the documentation doesn’t seem to exist anymore, but I don’t think it’s to do with that. I’ve tried playing around with the PLD parameters but nothing seems to stop the timeout issue.

Given this similar issue from July [https://github.com/PX4/Firmware/issues/9904](https://github.com/PX4/Firmware/issues/9904)
I’m wondering if this is a persisting issue.

Has anyone managed to get IRlock with SITL working correctly?

I’d also be interested to hear about anyone who’s used IRlock with a Pixhawk 4. Thanks

Tom

We are using irlocks in hardware (with a Pixracer) and in SITL. We have no problems. It should be noted though, that our firmware is based on PX4 v1.7.4 currently. Perhaps it has been broken since.
You could give that version a try.

How does it time out exactly? Can you share a log?

It goes to the set altitude for initiating the precision landing, waits the specified time, then can’t locate the IR lock in the specified time, so times out and initiates normal landing instead. I’ve tried setting the minimum horizontal distance threshold as high as possible (10m), but it doesn’t solve it. I’m not at work now so don’t have the exact logs or a logfile. I can get them tomorrow.

It’s reassuring to know that you’ve got it working with one version of the software though! I’ll see if I can test it with 1.7.4. Thanks a lot Nicolas.

So here’s the console output I get when building the firmware, taking off, and attempting a precision land. Yesterday, I hadn’t noticed the message “[Wrn] [msgs.cc:1808] Conversion of sensor type[logical\_camera] not suppported.” I guess this is an issue with interfacing with Gazebo, but either way I’m not sure how to fix it.

Yes it looks like something is broken with the Gazebo simulation. The message you mention is not printed when I run it. I see that I have Gazebo 7.0.0 installed. It’s possible that Gazebo’s API has changed since and the logical camera is not supported the way we use it anymore.

I’m having a similar issue with Precision Landing in SITL. I attempted various combinations of Firmware and Gazebo versions without luck. @tbrs did you identify the issue?

Thanks!

@ebabyak No I never figured it out. I had meant to try using the same version of firmware that Nicolas is running but got sidetracked. Given it’s not just me experiencing this, I’m guessing there is a genuine problem caused by an update to Gazebo as Nicolas describes.

I was doing the testing to assess the precision landing feature for myself before buying all the necessary sensors. If it’s just a Gazebo issue then hopefully it’s still fine in the real world. I’ll try and find the time to have another go at solving this.

@tbrs2 @Nicolas - After a little digging I discovered landing\_target\_estimator wasn’t started. I started it from the px4 shell using: landing\_target\_estimator start and can now do successful precision lands. @tbrs2 I think the logical\_camera message you are getting from Gazebo isn’t critical.

That worked for me too. Well done ebabyak, and thanks very much!

This was likely caused by

@bkueng I’m not yet familiar with the new SITL init scripts. Where should airframe-/simulation-specific applications be started?

I’d add it directly to the vehicle’s startup script:

@ebabyak can you confirm that adding `landing_target_estimator start` as described by @bkueng gives you a functioning system without further modifications? And if so, would you mind opening a PR with the change?

@Nicolas This worked for me, created PR at [https://github.com/PX4/Firmware/pull/10882](https://github.com/PX4/Firmware/pull/10882)
