Controlling Individual Motors

Hello!

I’m a senior engineering student working on my undergraduate thesis. My team is building an ‘optimized’ drone following the research done by the University of Queensland (https://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/drones/iros-2013-should-quadrotors-all-look-like-this) on the topic.

The design looks like a Y6 with two coaxial rotors in the middle for thrust, and the outer rotors used only for maneuvering.

The problem we’re having, is are there any flight controller systems that can do this? Could we in theory use an X8 flight controller configuration, but program it so that the thrust only turns on the coaxial center rotors, and the right/left controls the exterior ones?
